802.11r Approved – IEEE

Progress? Yes, the wireless N standard basically cannot get it right. The need for speed is here, some companies do see this and create their own hardware based on the lose N standard. Highlights of the 802.11r standard above (what we really care about):

  • Switching from 1 wireless network to another will happen in 50ms. Fast enough to have no loss during a phone conversation
  • Authentication speed increases
  • Based off of Fast BSS Transition (see the wiki link)

Very Interesting Read by an LA Times author David Lazarus.

A cellphone bill roams to the stratosphere

Most of us know that data is murder when it comes to charging Americans internationally. It’s pretty funny that most other countries do not spend nearly as much for the same services. For example Taiwan has cell service + data + text for about 20 bucks a month.

TMobile in this example is shady, they know how the system works and the passing of responsibility to other carriers is an easy way to get a customer frustrated. The other cell company in question will do the same and the process will be endless.

I recently went to Mexico and as soon as I crossed the border I got a text message from AT&T saying that I was now roaming and data charges apply. Problem with this? It doesn’t include a FREAKING price. Even an estimation would be nice “Dear Customer, international roaming enabled; estimated cost 10$/MB”. I am not sure if the lady in the article got such a message about data being on roaming, but companies need to be at least appear like they want to help the consumer make good decisions.

Windows XP Petition

Posted in News, Software, Tech on April 14th, 2008 by J – Be the first to comment

I was somewhat disappointed to read this article posted on CNN. I understand how people and users get used to one program, but i think people need to give up a good thing for the benefit of new tech. Take for example, the coming analog signal conversion happening in the US for TV. The government, while late, is taking measures to free up more spectrum for other technologies. The same goes here. If everyone is going to rely on XP for the rest of time, then how can Microsoft and other vendors continue to grow and expand their own horizons. From the start, Vista has gotten a bad wrap, and rightly so. Do you honestly thing XP was solid pre-sp1? No WAY was it remotely close to stable, that’s why so many companies were still reliant on Win 2000.

I think people will eventually adopt Vista. In my opinion, Microsoft needs to market Vista better to regain user perception on how this operating system runs. What do you think? I also believe the marketing department at Microsoft needs to come up with fresh ideas fast!

Text Messages During Emergency

Posted in News, Tech on April 9th, 2008 by J – Be the first to comment

Prior to 9/11 mostly only techy’s knew about text messaging while cell networks were down. This was due to messages being sent over emergency bands. Later, cell carriers added multimedia and other data to be passed over those same lines thus that old trick is dead.

Now the FCC will be approving an emergency text messaging system that would be used in the case of emergency by the government. Customers and carriers will be able to opt into the new system. Interesting it took them this long to introduce a good measure.

Comcast vs BitTorrent = BitTorrent Wins

Posted in News, Tech on March 27th, 2008 by J – Be the first to comment

Maybe my title is a tad dramatic but it did feel like quite a battle. Personally have done my fair share of downloading torrent files, it’s simply a great way of deploying information. When I first heard that Comcast was sniffing out BitTorrent users I was extremely wary. I believe a service provider should “provide” and not manage. I understand technically how the amount of packets are extremely inefficient but limiting protocols and services isn’t the right approach in my opinion. Either way, I am happy that they took the hint from both the consumer and FCC.

Yahoo mentioned today that they didn’t have an interest in selling it’s company at the 44.2 billion that Microsoft proposed. They simply think they are worth more than 31 dollar per share and that the company has room to grow. Details below. >:(
