Back to the basics

Posted in Games, Media, Software, Tech on August 12th, 2008 by J – 1 Comment

AOC is dead.. yup, i just can’t wait for them to get a vision in the game. Saw that coming? Me too…

While I wait for Warhammer Online to come out Sept 18th, I decided to go back to my roots (originally EQ1) but now EQ2. I already sold my character via their “station exchange” 4 years ago. Now that I am back it’s really amazing how much it has changed. The character development, and general game-play has much improved. So I will enjoy this for the time being. Hopefully i won’t get too addicted… but we’ll see how that goes ;)

AOC starting to fade..

AOC has finally started to slow down for me. Actually for about 1-2 weeks now. After failed promise after failed promise I can only state how disappointed I am in the game. I’ll try and list all the faults here.

  • The “PVP Patch” was supposed to be here late June or Early July… Umm yea it’s August now
  • Class imbalance runs ramped. I have a DT and a POM. The DT is simply a joke and the POM is actually middle of the road which is fine. The DT’s armor and dps are the worst in the game and they can’t actually PVP at all. If I wanted to spend years gathering Gem’s and adding unholy damage to all my gear then they can be viable but I don’t have the time to do so. I am by no means a light gamer as I play 1-2 hours a day, but come on…. I’d rather be sending my time on something fun.
  • The developers lack direction. They switches gears on a dime and are constantly making updates to issues that do not matter. Like dressing naked women in the game, seriously? How about fixing the bugs?
  • The game is in Beta. The devs continue to make MAJOR, not minor changes to the games dynamic. One example is the recent nerf to gems, that change alone made it nearly impossible to raid with the limited raid content available. People who spent countless hours grinding away are pissed because their once uber armor is now crap. An example: Unholy dmg on a weapon went from 12.0 to .120 how awesome is that?!
  • Bugs / Memory leaks – The game is a technical nightmare. I’m in IT and when I get home I don’t want to have to troubleshoot a game to play it.

In summary Funcom = FAIL

P.S. I’ll give you until Sept 18th (The day Warhammer Online comes out, I’ve already preordered)

Microsoft SyncToy 2.0

Posted in Software, Tech on August 6th, 2008 by J – Be the first to comment

This is the best application I have seen built by Microsoft. They finally get something right, backup’s made easy. With the options available and the ability to run as a task, Synctoy 2.0 is FREE and EASY!

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=c26efa36-98e0-4ee9-a7c5-98d0592d8c52&displaylang=en

Here are the available Backup options:

  1. Synchronize: New and updated files are copied both ways. Renames and deletes in one folder is repeated on the other.
  2. Echo: New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames and deletes on the left are repeated on the right.
  3. Subscribe: Updated files on the right are copied to the left is the file name already exists on the left.
  4. Contribute: New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames on the left are repeated on the right. Similar to Echo, except there are no deletions.
  5. Combine: New and updated files are copied both ways. Renamed and deleted files are ignored.

Requirements: XP or Vista

Microsoft .NET Framework v2.0
1GHz Intel P3 processor or equivalent
256MB RAM, 512MB RAM recommended
20MB free disk space

Advanced Tip: To run Sync as a Task… use the -R switch to run all sync’s you have created.

“C:\Program Files\Microsoft\SyncToy\SyncToy.exe” -R

Upgraded From 2GB Ram to 4GB Ram in Vista and Score Goes Down

Posted in Software, Tech on May 9th, 2008 by J – Be the first to comment

So far my experience in Vista has been positive. Like all gamers who are now using Vista, I am consumed by the “PC performance” AKA “Vista Experience” points. When I tested my experience at 2GB of ram, I had a memory score of 5.4. I added 2GB more (IDENTICAL) memory to the machine for a total of 4GB, now my score is 5.3. :(

Current System Build:

  • Asus P5W DH Deluxe
  • 4GB Corsair 800 MHz Memory
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
  • Raid 0 Seagate HD x2
  • Seagate HD for backup
  • Nvidia 7600GT (Riva Tuner, unlocked 16 pipelines)
  • Vista Ultimate SP1

No idea why, but it’s very annoying…

Windows XP Petition

I was somewhat disappointed to read this article posted on CNN. I understand how people and users get used to one program, but i think people need to give up a good thing for the benefit of new tech. Take for example, the coming analog signal conversion happening in the US for TV. The government, while late, is taking measures to free up more spectrum for other technologies. The same goes here. If everyone is going to rely on XP for the rest of time, then how can Microsoft and other vendors continue to grow and expand their own horizons. From the start, Vista has gotten a bad wrap, and rightly so. Do you honestly thing XP was solid pre-sp1? No WAY was it remotely close to stable, that’s why so many companies were still reliant on Win 2000.

I think people will eventually adopt Vista. In my opinion, Microsoft needs to market Vista better to regain user perception on how this operating system runs. What do you think? I also believe the marketing department at Microsoft needs to come up with fresh ideas fast!

Q: What do each of these roles do?

A: There are 5 different user roles in wordpress

  • Authors – Can create content and publish them without Admin review.
  • Contributors – Are authors that need approval from Admins to be published.

You can now download Vista SP1 through the windows update site. I have read mixed review on the product how it will only increase write times by 1-5%. But anything to speed up performance will help. Thank you M$.

Update: 1 Hour later (download + install)

I have installed SP1. My boot time seems a little faster, maybe by about 5 seconds. Direct Download Link Here

Engadget – Vista SP1

Finally! This is what I have been waiting for before upgrading to Vista at home. As with most windows releases the first public release is really a beta test. :P Now that SP1 is coming I just need to find someone with a discount to purchase Utimate edition for me. 270 bucks is crazy for an operating system. Shoot for that much $$ I can get a UMPC.
